Not too many countries can claim a political hero who is also a much beloved literary figure. José Martí was a 19th century Cuban national hero, political theorist and poet. Through his writings and political activity, he became a symbol for Cuba's bid for independence against Spain in the 19th century, and Marti is often referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence.”

One of his verses was adapted for the popular song, “Guantanamera.” This was a worldwide hit in the 60s as performed by the Sandpipers. Nowadays, if you’re in the Caribbean and dining within earshot of a strolling musician, chances are you’ll hear “Guantanamera.”

I am a truthful man
From where the palm tree grows
And before dying I want
To let out the verses of my soul

My verse is light green
And it is flaming red
