One of my favorite evenings was a concert at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, NYC, where Toots and the Maytals headlined a reggae show. Even though he was packing a bit of a beer belly, Toots came out clad in tight black leather. I’m pretty sure he was flying on something besides the music, but that didn’t stop him from giving a balls-to-the-wall performance. Toots was great, and the show-stopper was his hit, Funky Kingston.
Toots and the Maytals were one of the best known reggae groups from the early 60s and into the 70s. Listen below to a rousing version of Funky Kingston – it will definitely give you a shot in the arm – maybe a shot somewhere else, too – and get you moving through the rest of your day.
