2022 Travel Trends Survey from VisitorsCoverage.com
Here’s a glance at 2022 travel trends based on the findings from a consumer survey titled "2022 Travel Trends," commissioned by VisitorsCoverage.com, a Silicon Valley-based insurtech company. The survey collected responses from 1,511 individuals across the U.S. to find that despite the ongoing pandemic, Americans plan to travel more in 2022. They are hesitant to stay too far from home and are seeking flexible options while booking their travel plans. Respondents rated “flexible cancelation options or the ability to cancel for any reason” as the #1 item that would make them feel ‘safer and better prepared’ to travel in 2022
A trend we’re likely to see this year is the continued rise of trip insurance purchases, as 64 percent of respondents tended to believe that a travel insurance policy that covers them in case of emergencies would make them more likely to travel in 2022.
The trend reflects the growth that VisitorsCoverage has been experiencing since last November. The company had significant increases in website traffic and volume of generated quotes. In the last three months, 99 percent of trip insurance plans have included Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage. This paid add-on option gives travelers the ability to cancel bookings for any reason and still recoup up to 75 percent of non-refundable costs.
Here are key takeaways:
- 70 percent plan to travel more in 2022 than they did in 2021, but may prefer the autonomy of driving in their own car over travel that involves public transportation.
- ‘Road trips’ (45 percent) were selected as the most popular mode of transport followed by ‘domestic flights’ (22 percent) versus ‘international flights’ (16 percent).
- Too many COVID-19 restrictions and requirements were cited as the #1 deterrent keeping Americans from traveling abroad. If they had more flexible cancelation options, they would feel safer and better prepared to travel.
- It appears that people are also waiting for the moment that “travel bans” are lifted as it came in second. With the rise of the Omicron variant, its likely countries will continue to tighten entry requirements and potentially issue new travel bans on U.S. tourists so more restrictions may be headed our way.
